ADAM: Been waiting to see what would happen when Martha Rodgers and Jim Beckett get in a room together? You'll get your chance during November sweeps! Unfortunately, the family affair happens on the same night Castle and Beckett are stranded without their phones while protecting a witness from the mob. "There's some tension because they've had the 'meet the folks' dinner and it hasn't gone particularly well," creator Andrew W. Marlowe tells us. So, what's the problem? "It's about who Martha is versus who Jim is," Marlowe says. "It's a bit of oil and water."

ADAM: The episode, titled "Secret Santa," once again plays on the hush-hush relationship that Castle and Beckett have (pretty much unsuccessfully) tried to keep from their colleagues. But creator Andrew W. Marlowe confirms that the secret will officially be out soon. "We're going to move beyond it. There's only so much storytelling we can sustain," he says. "Capt. Gates is certainly the big issue. How is she going to react? Is that going to threaten the partnership?" So will that reveal be a Christmas gift to viewers or a big lump of coal? "[We] will be dealing with the good of the holiday season — and the bad," Marlowe teases.

Meeting the parents is a rite of passage for any new couple, but for Richard Castle and Kate Beckett, the stakes could not be higher. After hyping us up for four painfully long seasons, Castle creator Andrew Marlowe finally made Caskett's relationship official — and now it's time to face all that comes along with it. Like the fact that their parents may not get along too well.

What does the tension between Martha and Jim mean for Castle and Beckett? Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with Marlowe for an exclusive interview about this disastrous dinner date, and the long-term consequences on our newly coupled-up crime solvers.

Wetpaint Entertainment: What can you tease about the upcoming episodes in November sweeps?

Andrew Marlowe: We have an episode that starts off with a "Meet the Parents" dinner that doesn't go well. It causes a little bit of stress between Castle and Beckett. And as they're investigating a murder, they have to go pick up the witness to the murder, and they're bringing the witness into the 12th precinct when they suddenly get jumped. They lose their phones, their badge. Beckett doesn't have her gun, and they're on the run in a bad part of town in the middle of the night with no way to get back to the precinct, in the midst of having a little bit of a couple's spat. So it's tense and fun at the same time.

What can you say about that dinner with Jim and Martha?

Well, let's just say they don't hit it off in the way the kids had hoped they would because they're two very different people. And of course, it makes Castle and Beckett think, “Well, we're two very different people. Are we looking at our future here? If they can't get along, what does that mean about us?” It's all sorts of fun. So we explore that along the way.

But we shouldn't read into some sort of love connection between their folks?

Oh, I don't think that you should read that in right now. And also, that would be a little weird, wouldn’t it?

Are we going to see tension in Castle and Beckett's relationships beyond just the parents?

I think that in any relationship when you get together, there’s surprises. There are bumps in the road. There are times when you question decisions that you made. And I think like any authentic couple, we're going to see them do that as well.

Are you happy at this point, putting them together and finally getting to tell that story?

Yeah. For me, it was absolutely the right decision. I don't think we could have kept them apart unless we were doing something artificial that would have felt to the fans like we were faking it. I think it was time for the two characters to come together, but it's certainly not the end of their story.

How this relationship develops, whether they last, whether they sustain, how they deal with the bumps in the road, all those things are interesting. And it's not like the two characters have fundamentally changed when you get into a relationship. He's still Castle. She's still Beckett, and they still have fundamentally different outlooks on life. Sometimes that can work in a relationship, and sometimes it can cause stress.

“Meredith’s moving in!” Darby Stanchfield says with a laugh, as the Scandal cast member teases her January 2013 Castle encore as Rick’s ex-wife. “She’s packed her bags and she’s back!” OK, some context: Mer makes camp at Rick’s when their daughter Alexis falls ill with mono. Thing is, Kate is also crashing there at the time, while her apartment is fumigated. As you can imagine, it all adds up to awesome awkwardness. Does Castle even try to conceal his new, workplace romance? “It’s pretty obvious,” Stanchfield previews, “so we get way past that right away.”

Castle | Ausiello in recent weeks has been taunting you with one of his patented asterisk quizzes, about a four-letter word that threatens to keep Rick and Kate apart on Christmas. Now that I have screened Monday’s episode – aka the ABC drama’s first such Yuletide outing – I can say that although many (OK, most?) of you have since solved the asterisk quiz, you do not know the very interesting reason why Beckett’s “*ork” comes into play. I can also tell you the episode features one of the (faint praise alert!) more amusing subplots for Captain Gates; you won’t ever guess with whom Javy spends the holiday; Beckett has very specific instructions about her gift from Castle; and, yes, a “sexy Santa” costume is part of someone’s itinerary. There’s also a fun line where Rick invites Kate over for “a Christmas movie marathon… or some other kind of marathon that makes life wonderful.” The “dead’ Santa” case itself is a bit clunky, but the close of the hour IMO makes up for it.

It looks as if we could be meeting Richard Castle's dad next year. Exec producer Andrew Marlowe is considering an "explosively personal" February-sweeps two-parter of ABC's Castle that would introduce the patriarch in a way that would profoundly impact both his son's and granddaughter Alexis' lives.

What kind of man might he be? "I'm pretty sure he's ruggedly handsome," says Marlowe with a laugh, adding that Nathan Fillion's fantasy choice to play him is Harrison Ford!

Also in February, Senator Bracken (Jack Coleman), who is behind the murder of Beckett's mother, returns. When it appears that he's tied to another killing, "Beckett believes this is her opportunity to nail him once and for all," says Marlowe.

Detective Esposito will get the backstory treatment in an episode that reveals his early delinquent years. "We learn Esposito had a bit of a record himself," says Marlowe, who is also planning a special mythology episode for Detective Ryan.

As for the romance between Castle and Beckett (Stana Katic), they'll celebrate their first Valentine's Day and contemplate what gifts to exchange — all while investigating a murder on a Real Housewives-type reality show (actual unscripted-TV stars may appear in the episode). As for "Caskett" getting married, Marlowe turns cagey. "Not right now," he says. "But we'll see as we get toward the end of the season." Sounds like another "Will-they-or-won't-they?" cliffhanger!

Especially since Kate is also at the time bunking with Rick, who famously has/had a habit of indulging in “ex sex” — and old habits perhaps die hard for one of the former marrieds. ”Castle has kind of dug his own grave and spends the episode trying to dig himself out of it,” Marlowe previews. “It’s also interesting to see everybody else’s take on things.” For in addition to RySposito sounding off on the sticky sitch, “You have Lanie saying to Beckett, ‘Girl, you have got to claim your territory!’”

"A murder seems to lead to his doorstep and Kate thinks this her opportunity to finally get the man who was responsible for her mother's murder behind bars," creator Andrew W. Marlowe,adding that Beckett may once again find herself out of control. "Nothing is as it seems," he says. "The case leads us into really interesting moral territory for our character."

There’s increasing (read: deafening) buzz that a pivotal couple on a show with a very passionate audience may be going their separate ways by season’s end.

According to sources, producers of the hour-long drama in question are looking to close out the season with a bang, and they believe splitting up this beloved couple will provide just such a jolt. Additionally, the break-up (which it’s fair to say no one will see coming) would give the series a lot of creative juice as it heads into what could be its final season.

ADAM: You may be waiting longer than you think for that meeting. Although creator Andrew W. Marlowe confirms that there will be some further exploration of Castle's father come February sweeps, he certainly isn't the focus of the episodes. "I would not characterize the two-parter as being about his dad," Marlowe says. "Hopefully we can find a great and elegant way to embrace Castle's father's mythology in a way that's going to be exciting."

On Castle's Valentine's Day episode, "Castle picks out a wonderful gift for Kate" but it accidentally ends up in someone else's hands, says Nathan Fillion, who collected a trophy for Favorite TV Dramatic Actor (the show also won Favorite TV Crime Drama). "Things get very awkward and sticky, but ultimately fans should find it romantic." As for the other couples on the ABC show, Detective Ryan finally reveals to his coworkers the reason he's been late to work: He's been trying to impregnate his ovulating wife. And fans of Esposito and Lanie will be happy to hear that, according to Jon Huertas, who plays Esposito, the cop "speaks a little French to her." It's no mystery why they call it the language of love.

Episode 5.13 of Castle will be called "Recoil"

ADAM: This awesome news wasn't enough? Fine, I'll let Jon Huertas share some more secrets. "Something crazy that I think people will be just so blown away by is that we're going to work with an FBI agent. That never happens," a cheeky Huertas says with a laugh. In all seriousness, the case, which involves the kidnapping of a Middle Eastern businessman's daughter, will be truly international. "It takes part of the team out of the country to Europe, which is something we've never done," Huertas says. Unfortunately, don't expect a romantic night out in Paris for Beckett and Castle, the latter of which will find his life in danger. "This two-parter is very scary for the team," Huertas says.

Branton Box will be playing the role of "Valkov's Man" in episode 5.16 of Castle.
